Held at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre in Phuket Town
iTravel was thrilled to attend the exhilarating Closing Ceremony of the 4th Asian Beach Games, held at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre in Phuket Town on the night of November 23, 2014. With its vibrant processions of athletes from around the world, its 4 dramatic shows, fireworks and impressive cast of over 800 performers, the event made for a thrilling spectacle and was the perfect conclusion to what has proven to be a highly successful edition of the Asian Beach Games.
Perhaps the most incredible – and moving – part was the release of turtles back to the sea, a symbolic act which demonstrated Phuket’s commitment to eco-tourism and the warmth and caring nature of the Thai people.
In fact, the Asian Beach Games has shone a special spotlight on Thai people and the Thai way, displaying to perfection how Thai people can pull together and create an incredible world-class event, dealing with unavoidable daily hiccups with a smile and that light-hearted mai pen rai attitude which so charms the tourists who flock to the Land of Smiles every year.
The next Asian Beach Games will be held in Vietnam – but with this highly successful edition of the sporting competition under its belt, Phuket has more than proven its ability to host events of this calibre and it is to be expected that many more such momentous occasions will be held on the island in the years to come. iTravel can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for Phuket, and Thailand in general.
