Guide to Baan Kiriwong in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand
Baan Kiriwong is the kind of place where it’s easy to feel right at home.Located in the countryside outside of Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, exploring this little village makes a great day trip for many reasons.
History of Baan Kiriwong
The village is best known as an ecotourism destination, and it was even awarded for such efforts in the 1998 Thailand Tourism Awards. The residents are mostly fruit farmers growing local fruits such as mangosteen, rambutan and durian. As such, the daily way of life is very laidback around here. You can rent a bicycle for next to nothing and take in the greenery and mountain views. There are also lots of cute cafés and restaurants where you can drink traditional Thai coffee or eat southern delicacies like fried chicken and sticky rice.
Things to See and Do at Baan Kiriwong
Making arts and crafts as souvenirs is another main source of income for Kiriwong residents. We went to a local fabric-dyer that makes and sells beautiful scarves, cloth purses and clothing. Everything is dyed organically using leaves and pieces of tree bark from around the region. Colorful scarf designs are made by freehand drawings using wax. The wax is removed by boiling the fabric, leaving a fabulous piece of cloth that can be used as a sarong, tablecloth or a tapestry for home. The scarves can be purchased here, and they are also shipped and sold around Southeast Asia too.
