Bangkok bids farewell to 2016

Thailand Countdown 2017

Thailand’s rich mix of history, culture and religious devotion was on full display at events held throughout the kingdom to mark the end of the year and to welcome 2017 in typically Thai fashion. 2016 was in many ways a momentous year for Thailand, bringing with it many changes for the Kingdom, most notably the passing of the former King Bhumiphol Adulyadej and the accession of his son and heir to the Thai throne.

It was only fitting therefore that the people of Bangkok joined together to bring the year to a close and welcome in the new year with a series of fitting and dignified celebrations across the nations capital, giving Bangkokians the chance to join together in an expression of unity and celebration of their ‘Thainess’.

Moving candle lighting and prayer ceremonies called Sang Thien Haeng Siam or Candlelight of Siam were held throughout the Kingdom. The event was attended by thousands of local residents but also attracted significant numbers of visitors, who were only to happy to share their thoughts on the New Years ceremonies with us.

The ceremony also attracted a number of dignitaries, including H.E. General Tanasak Patimapragorn, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand who joined others in prayers for peace, unity and prosperity in the year to come.
