How to Make Som Tum or Papaya Salad
In Thailand, Som tum or papaya salad is iconic for using mortar, pestle. But that’s not a must, if you can’t really find mortar and pestle you can still easily make Som tum at home.
1.Insert clove of garlic and chilli pepper into the mortar and roughly smash the garlic and the spices. (Beware that the more you smash, the spicier it becomes)
2.Insert palm sugar and wait for it to dissolve. Follow by shredded green papaya, carrots, tomato, peanuts, and season with fish sauce, lime juice and keep combining the Som tum until they’re thoroughly seasoned.
3.Adjust the seasoning to your taste by adding more fish sauce, sugar, and lime juice.
4. Place them in a plate and serve them with fresh vegetable and sticky rice.
You can also use tamarind instead of lime for and softer and subtler sour taste. The amount of each seasoning is just a guideline for you. Som tum is more like an individual dish, so take your time and find your own Som tum.
