Join us as we look back on four fabulous months of Festivities, Cultural Extravaganzas and Fun in the Sun!
January saw us welcoming in 2015 in grand style with a fabulous New Year’s Countdown at the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok, where we got to enjoy a resplendent meal followed by the exciting countdown and a dramatic fireworks display above the waters of the Chao Phraya.
January: Grand Opening Ceremony of Discover Thainess Campaign
January also marked the launch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) 2015 Discover Thainess campaign, and iTravel was privileged to attend the Grand Opening Ceremony. This vibrant cultural extravaganza included colourful displays of traditional and contemporary music, dance and even acrobatics, as well as a parade through the streets of Bangkok – the perfect way to promote Thai culture and celebrate the launch of this ground-breaking TAT initiative.
February: Chinese New Year 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand
February saw iTravel indulging in New Year’s festivities once again! This month it was Chinese New Year and people flocked to the China Cultural Centre in Bangkok to be wowed by performances of traditional dance, martial arts, acrobatics and music, demonstrating the rich traditions hailing from 10 provinces of China.
Discover Thainess Tour of the North
During this month iTravel also embarked on a fascinating Discover Thainess Tour of the North, with guest presenter Daniel Marsh from the Philippines. Our travels took us to Lampang, Nan, Loei and Petchabun where, among other things, we got to see some beautiful temples, pick and eat our body weight in strawberries, sample delectable local dishes, enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and check out some truly spectacular views. Best of all, Daniel Marsh got to experience a taste of authentic Thainess thanks to the warm, friendly, open nature of the local people we met on our journey.
March: 11th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Festival
The month of March brought with it another remarkable cultural event – the 11th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Festival, which was held (fittingly) on Nao Khanom Tom, otherwise known as Boxer’s Day! The fest took place in historic Ayutthaya and was a great introduction to the ritual of respect known as Wai Kru, as all 1,200 participating fighters performed the ritual in front of enthralled spectators. After that the crowds were mesmerised by compelling displays of martial arts and also got to learn more about the history and current practices of Muay Thai, not to mention being treated to displays of Aranyik sword-making and Yantra tattooing.
TBEX Thailand Preview, Trat Island, Thailand
Also taking place in March was the TBEX Trat Island Preview Trip, which allowed iTravel to experience the unique beauty of Trat, the easternmost province in Thailand. From visiting a sleepy traditional fishing village to checking out a luxurious spa resort, swimming with the fishes (quite literally!) and exploring the province’s many picturesque islands, we had a whirlwind adventure in Trat and can’t wait to return.
April: Songkran Festival 2015, Thai New Year
April was just as action-packed and exciting, as once again another New Year’s celebrations took place. On this occasion it was Song Kran, the Thai New Year, which just so happens to be the world’s biggest water fight! To capture all the fun we headed to Nakhon Si Thammarat, where we got to experience the Nang Kradan Festival, before continuing on to conclude our New Year’s merriment in Baeng San in central Thailand. Here we got to witness another colourful local festival, Wan Lai, which involves merit making, prayer – and a unique sand pagoda-building contest!
THAI Smile Airways Phuket, Thailand Trip
Last but certainly not least, in April iTravel also paid a visit to Phuket, the Jewel of the Andaman, where we filmed iTips videos with THAI Smile Airways as well as the latest episode of our Romantic Escapes series at Le Coral Hideaway and the Banyan Tree Phuket – if you’re planning your Thai honeymoon be sure to check out our videos as they are guaranteed to give you plenty of romantic inspiration!
