iTravel Updates July 19-24 | Religious Events
This is a special week in the Buddhist calendar, which means there will be several religious events taking place in the city. Read on to discover a little more about them.
Asalha Puja is a Buddhist holy day commemorating the date of the Buddha’s first sermon to his disciples, when the Triple Gem of the Sangha, Dhamma and Buddha first came into being. The event takes place on the day of the full moon in the eighth lunar month. This year, it falls on 19 July, and the occasion will be marked in temples across the city. You can experience alms giving and a procession of candles at the Bangkok National Museum, and see a traditional wan thian candle ceremony at Wat Pathum Wanaram.
Buddhist Lent is an important three-month retreat that always takes place on the day following Asalha Puja, which this year is 20 July. It is a time when monks and novices are confined to the temple to study their Dhamma, and is a practice dating back to the time of the Buddha himself. Special celebrations will be held in Bangkok and across Thailand to mark the event.
Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2016
On 19-20 July 2016 Ubon Ratchathani’s Thung Si Mueang Park will be playing host to two thrilling processions as part of the Candle Festival. Majestic Lenten candles will be moulded and sculpted by skilled artisans; these candles will then be given to the temples as an act of merit-making. As well as the procession there will also be various colourful cultural displays guaranteed to provide onlookers with an unforgettable spectacle. Don’t miss it.
