Loy Krathong is one of two big celebrations held in Thailand each year. This year, Loy Krathong celebrations are cancelled in some cities such as Pattaya – even New Years fireworks have been canceled there. Despite this, we believe Loy Krathong will go forward in most cities per current guidance of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, including in Chiang Mai.
We encourage you to watch our live, studio based iTravel Exclusives show to learn more about this intriguing holiday with a peek at previous year celebrations.
What to expect for Loy Krathong 2016 after death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej
It’s difficult to say precisely what to expect and we believe holiday celebrations will vary between different parts of Thailand. While Loy Krathong may be cancelled in a few cities, we believe the holiday with it’s great cultural importance will more or less take place.
That said, it’s a given the celebrations are going to be scaled down with changes made to pay respect to the King, especially in Bangkok. Beauty contests, or even best Krathong contests, commonly associated with Loy Krathong may not occur. If you attend, the overall mood may be more somber than celebratory and we suggest appropriate dress while being sensitive to the Thai people whom are still mourning.
Thai’s will still create intricate Krathongs to be lit and launched into the waterways. This is to pay respect to the goddess of water. The holiday is also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ with the brightly lit Krathongs lighting up rivers, lakes, even the ocean.
Depending on where you’ll partake in the holiday, we strongly advise you follow news from the city or community. While impossible for us to cover every single city and/or town, we will provide you with up to date information as it becomes available.
