Songkran 2013

Khao San Road Songkran Hotspot!

Songkran is celebrated annually from the 13 – 15 April and the whole country gets time off to come together to celebrate. Thailand originally adopted this tradition from the ancient Brahmins in India – but today it couldn’t be more ingrained in Thai culture.  Houses are cleaned, Buddha’s are washed and annual rites are performed to, pay respect to ancestors and elders with water to symbolising luck and renewal. At all temples you will find the aromatic flower garlands which date back over two hundred years when ladies of the royal court practiced flower arranging. Generally scented with jasmine and roses, these smell heavenly.

I have come to Songkran hotspot Khao San Rd. During Songkran on basically every street locals and visitors are armed with water guns and buckets to douse each other! But people flock here for the huge street party. When you go to a Songkran play area like Khao San or Silom you will find all you need in one place. So I say just pop on comfy clothes and sandals that you don’t mind getting wet, rub on sunscreen and girls – definitely get that waterproof mascara on!  You can buy all kinds of water guns in street-side stalls, as well as buckets and thankfully lots of water. I decided to stay somewhere near the action of Khao San Rd, but I’m a girl who likes her luxury and rest so it had to be like an oasis in the craziness – and I found the spot. Riva Surya Hotel is a boutique establishment with 68-rooms just walking distance from Khao San that sits on the Chao Phraya River too.

They also have their own boat to get to the main boat and BTS Sky Train terminal of Saphan Taksin so its easy to get about. They have a great pool and outdoor water for those water babies who want a swim after their turn on the other end of a water gun and the view of the river is great. I think this is one of Bangkok’s hidden treasures . The style of the Riva Surya is brilliant too. It has an almost antique feel that is completely contrasted by the modern building – and lots of cool decorations.
