Tips and Tricks in Getting a Tuk Tuk

Around Bangkok you can find Tuk Tuks in most central areas – especially the touristy areas. You hail a Tuk Tuk the same way you would for a taxi – put your arm and hand out and wave your hand. Now the next part is where it gets interesting – if you are going to take a Tuk Tuk and don’t want to pay an exorbitant price, you need to haggle. Before you go anywhere first ask the driver how much to go to your destination.

The drivers are masters of hiking up the price, so when they give you a price it will most certainly be a third or a quarter higher that the actual price. Be friendly and fun with your bargaining and never yell or get angry – that is a sign of huge disrespect here. One you get a price you are happy with just climb in and get ready to get a very scenic drive.

Things to be aware in riding a Tuk Tuk

There are no seatbelts so hold on tight and place your bags on the floor in front of you held by your legs. Beware of any tuk tuk that offers you a really cheap price because they will most likely take you to many gem shops you didn’t bargain on! Tuk Tuk’s are a memorable part of Bangkok life. They provide easy and quick transport and what they lack in comfort they make up for in style.
