History about Sukhothai

The Sukhothai Historical Park is set in 70 square kilometers of land, you can find the ruins of 193 buildings which made up the ancient capital city. The word Sukhothai itself means happiness and peace and coming here you can see why it was be named this.

The historical Park is located about 12km from the modern city of Sukhothai and you can use mini buses or motorbikes to get there – and those services begin at 6am and run through to about 6pm. For foreigners, to enter the old city only costs 100 baht each which is about 3 US dollars and you can definitely fill a whole day here.Our guide gave us the insider info that the best time to visit is between 7am and 10am. Of course aside from the fact its cooler at this time, the sun is also rising giving these ruins a stunning backdrop. And also most of the striking temples are surrounded by moats, and at this time in the morning the reflections on the water are breathtaking – and make really cool photos too! The park was discovered in 1953 by the current King of Thailand and in 1991 the park earned the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ancient city walls encompass the site and there are Buddha images, palace buildings, big and small temples and even a Hindu temple. You can check out the sites by foot or by bike – its up to you.
